WISTA Sweden history

WISTA Sweden was founded in Stockholm in 1987, starting out with about 40 members. By the time of the association's 25th anniversary in 2012, the number of members was well above 100.

Some highlights in the history of WISTA Sweden

Before WISTA got its present name and shape, the movement consisted of a conference called Ladies' Shipping Day gathering women in shipping in a new hosting country each year. In 1984, the conference was held in Stockholm. Arranging the conference laid the ground for a Swedish WISTA network, which later became a National WISTA Association.

WISTA Sweden was founded at the premises of the Swedish Maritime Administration in Stockholm. 37 women from the maritime industry were present and set the association's by-laws.

The first regular meeting takes place in Gothenburg. The present members visit the refinery of Nynäs Petrolum and take a tour on board the M/V Nihon.

The spring meeting and AGM is held in Skellefteå. The members that came from the south travelled there in a hired antique train carriage of their own. When arriving in Skellefteå, they put on helmets and went 800 metres underground visiting one of Boliden's mines.

The international WISTA conference was arranged in Gothenburg. Maria Nygren held the opening address. The gala dinner was held at Börsen, where the District Council have their plenary sessions.

WISTA Sweden celebrated the 20th anniversary at Bachelor's Club in Gothenburg. WISTA Sweden's leadership is founded and the Compas Rose is awarded an exemplary leader, Ragnar Johansson at Stena Line.

Anna Risfelt Hammargren became a member of the Executive Committee of WISTA International.

The internatinonal conference and AGM was held at Hasselbacken in Stockholm. IMO Secretary-General Efthimios E Mitropoulos held the keynote speech. WISTA members from 27 nations were present.

WISTA Sweden celebrated its quarter century anniversary at Nääs Fabriker outside Gothenburg, in the presence of members, the international President Karin Orsel and guests from the Maritime Industry.

The spring conference and AGM was held in Stockholm. The Minister of Infrastructure Catharina-Elmsäter-Svärd holds an interesting speech with a following discussion.

WISTA Sweden celebrated the 30th Anniversary on October 17 in Villa Odinslund in Gothenburg, in the presence of members, invited guests and members from WISTA Norway, WISTA Denmark and WISTA Finland as well as the newly elected international President Despina Panayiotou Theodosiou.
