IT CANNOT be denied: Nigerian WISTA member and multi tasking lawyer Mfon Ekong Usoro was a formidable candidate for the WISTA International Personality of the Year 2011. No wonder that she was the chosen, one out of four persons eligible, to become Personality of the Year. Unfortunately she was not present at the WISTA International Conference in Stockholm to receive the honour, but the WISTA Nigeria board and members will certainly find ways to present her the trophy that goes with the honour.
Mfon Ekong Usoro curriculum vitae covers an impressive amount of over ten pages, which give an impression of an ever busy lady in senior management and advisory boards. Currently, she is Secretary General of the West and Central Africa Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control (“Abuja MoU”), thus being the first female Secretary General of this 22 Member States intergovernmental regional organisation. Part of the summing up states her position as the Managing Partner of Paul Usoro & Co. She heads the Maritime/Environment and Infrastructure Project Finance Section of this company. She has represented local and international blue chip companies and financial institutions in several transactions on project finance, shipping and aviation related businesses.
Ms Usoro also was Pioneer Director General and CEO of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (“NIMASA”) in the years 2006 and 2007. As such, she was the first and so far only female chief executive officer of a Federal Government maritime agency in Nigeria. She served as WISTA Nigeria President from 2002 to 2005. She also is founder of the Mfon Usoro Trust for Educational Advancement of Female Staff of Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency.
The long list of positions Ms Usoro has held, and holds today, concludes with an impressive number of publications about topical issues in her line of business and drafts of national acts and bills.
